Our doctor really recommended cord blood banking and explained its benefits to us. Our initial reaction was "No way, it's too expensive". Then we attended a Smart Cells seminar where the benefits were highlighted, the different diseases it can cure, and since research is still ongoing it could cure other diseases in the future. Having estimated that the cost over 25 years are well worth it we then asked the granparents if they would all pool in and it would be their special gift to baby Enya and the whole family too.
Smart Cells Malta is run very professionally; they even offer alternatives for payment which helps the individual immensely since it comes at a time when a lot of money is spent. The team was available round the clock and they had no problem even when we had to call them in the middle of the night, they were just as helpful and professional. They guided us as to the do's and don'ts so the blood can be safe since our baby was born on a Sunday morning; they came to collect it and were very professional in their manner.
What struck me was that they gave us the pack even though we had not made a definite decision yet, or paid any initial fee, and we felt that it says a lot about an individual.
I have since attended Smart Cells mothers' groups and it's fun to get to meet other mothers from all walks of life and it's a source of first hand information and experiences, which is very useful to a new mother.
I definitely recommend cord blood storage because, since nothing is to be taken for granted in this day and age, especially health, it might help in a possible future time of crisis and despair. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind at a time when everything around you is falling apart. Having a sick child is everyone's nightmare.
