The information below gives a simple guide to the collection/extraction procedure, using the smartbaby Collection Kit which for health care specialists like nurses and midwives is very straightforward.
Don't forget to discuss cord blood collection with your team long before you go into labour, so when you get to the hospital they'll know it's on your "list".
In the sterile environment of the delivery table, and immediately following the delivery (either by natural birth or Caesarean section):
Place two clamps on the umbilical cord as close as possible to the baby's abdomen.
Cut the umbilical cord between the two clamps and remove the baby from the sterile environment.
Take the sterile blood bag out of its packaging and place nearby in preparation for the cord blood collection.
Disinfect the umbilical cord where the needle will be inserted by means of the alcohol tissues or the supplied disinfectant kit. It may be necessary to prick blood from several places in the umbilical cord. Please ensure that these places have been properly sterilised beforehand.
Prick the umbilical cord in the disinfected area with the needle attached to the blood collection bag.
Hold the bag below the level of the cord to allow the blood to drain freely.
Fill the bag to capacity if possible (it can contain 250ml, or approximately - 300gr). Please ensure that a minimum of 60ml of blood is collected in the bag. As the bag already contains 35ml of anticoagulant, an easy visual guide is three times the volume of liquid, equal to 70ml of blood.
When as much blood as possible has been taken, gently squeeze any remaining blood from the tube into the bag.
At least two security knots (not sutures) should be tied in the collection tube to prevent leakage during transportation.
Cut the needle from the bag and dispose of appropriately in accordance with the hospital's waste disposal regulations.
Turn the bag over slowly several times, to mix the cord blood with the CPD anticoagulant.
The collected cord blood must be kept at room temperature; it should not be placed in a refrigerator or freezer.
